BAE Systems completes development of Striker II digital pilots helmet
By Wording OD
BAE Systems has completed development of its Striker II digital
helmet mounted display as part of its bid to offer a replacement for the
existing analogue Striker that is used by existing Eurofighter Typhoon
operators.
The new version incorporates integral night vision capability so
pilots do not have use night vision goggles (NVG) when flying at night,
as is the case with the existing version of the Striker.
Paul Smith, BAE Systems' future cockpit design advisor, told IHS Jane's
on 8 June that the new helmet's night vision capability was fully
integrated with the controls of the Typhoon and it could be activated by
the flick of a switch on the aircraft's Hands On-Throttle And Stick
(HOTAS).
"With the old helmet the pilot had to flip his NVG up and down when he wanted to use then," he said.
The company-funded product is awaiting an order and will be on
display at the 2016 Farnborough International Airshow in July, he said.

South Korea receives first batch of AW159 anti-submarine helicopters
By Wording OD
The Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) has received its first batch of
four AW159 shipborne anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters from
Ango-Italian defence company Leonardo-Finmeccanica.
The aircraft, which were delivered on 13 June, is part of an order
for eight airframes announced in January 2013 under South Korea's
Maritime Operational Helicopter programme that seeks to boost the RoKN's
submarine prosecution capabilities. The helicopters are expected to be
operated from the RoKN's Incheon-class guided-missile frigates.
The AW159s were originally scheduled to be delivered in the third
quarter of 2015 but was delayed by the aircraft's site acceptance tests
(SATs). "The SATs are taking longer than expected but we are working
with the customer to reduce the impact on the whole programme," a
Leonardo-Finmeccanica representative told IHS Jane's in February 2016 at the Singapore Airshow.
According to specifications provided by the company, the AW159
platform features a maximum take-off weight of 6 tonnes, a maximum range
of 265 nm (490 km), and a maximum endurance of 2 hours and 40 mins at
6,000 ft.
Besides ASW sensors, the helicopter can also be armed with
lightweight torpedoes, such as the K745 Cheong Sangeo (Blue Shark), and
depth charges to prosecute underwater vessels. Thales confirmed in
October 2013 that the RoKN's AW159 helicopters will be equipped with the
company's Compact FLASH Sonics low-frequency, long-range dipping sonar
system. The airframes will also be equipped with the Seaspray 7000E
active electronically scanned array radar supplied by Selex.
A Leonardo-Finmeccanica representative told IHS Jane's on 13
June that the company is currently scheduled to deliver the final batch
of four helicopters by the fourth quarter of 2016. South Korean news
agency Yonhap also reported on the same day that the RoKN is aiming to
operationally deploy the AW159s from mid-2017.

EUROSATORY 2016 - Renault Trucks Defense showcases latest VAB Mk 3 variants
By Wording OD
Renault Trucks Defense is exhibiting its latest Vehicule de l'Avante
Blinde (VAB) Mk 3 fitted with the Belgian CMI Defence CSE 90LP
two-person turret armed with a low pressure 90 mm gun, 7.62 mm co-axial
machine gun (MG) and a roof-mounted MG at Eurosatory 2016.
The CSE 90LP is the most powerful weapon system to have been installed on the VAB Mk 3 thus far.
Previous weapon systems installed for firing trials have included the
South African TRT-30 armed with a Russian 30 mm 2A42 dual-feed cannon
and 7.62 mm co-axial MG.
The company has developed an amphibious version of the VAB Mk 3 with
additional buoyancy aids and this is propelled through the water by two
propellers mounted externally on either side at the rear.
The VAB Mk 3 Electer parallel hybrid-drive demonstrator is also being
shown at the exhibition. Built under contract to the DGA, this vehicle
has completed more than 5,000 km of trials over different terrain
conditions in the past two years.
According to Renault Trucks Defense, the Electer has several modes of
operation, which include hybrid mode for reduced fuel consumption;
stealth mode for silent running with the main diesel engine switched
off; booster mode for rapid acceleration when required; and silent watch
mode with the auxiliary power unit charging the vehicle's batteries.
The VAB Mk 3 is powered by a MD7 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel
developing 340 hp coupled to an automatic transmission, which provides a
maximum road speed of 105 km/h.
The vehicle has a typical gross vehicle weight of 20 tonnes and the
baseline armoured personnel carrier version can accommodate a crew of
two and carry 10 dismounts. In the infantry fighting vehicle (IFV)
configuration, it has a crew of three and carries seven dismounts.
Standard equipment includes the "Battlenet Inside" electronic vehicle
architecture, a central tyre inflation system, air conditioning and
heating, run-flat tyres, and a 300 A alternator.

Boeing confident of extending Super Hornet and Growler production
By Wording OD
Boeing anticipates an extension of its F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and
EA-18G Growler production lines as a result of an increased operational
tempo by the US Navy (USN) and strong international interest in
procuring the platform, company officials told reporters on 10 June.
Speaking at Boeing's Global Sustainment and Support (GS&S) site
at Cecil Field in northern Florida, Dan Gillian, Vice President of the
F/A-18 and EA-18G programmes, said that, with the USN burning through
airframe hours at a far higher rate than originally intended and with
additional exports expected in the near term, the company is confident
of extending production from the current mid-2018 cut-off point through
into the next decade.
"I believe that we will continue to build new Hornets and Growlers.
We have slowed production down to two aircraft per month, and we will
keep it at that level through to mid-2018. There is strong domestic and
international demand that we see sustaining production through to the
mid-2020s," Gillian said.
The US Navy's current programme of record is for 568 Super Hornets
and 160 Growlers. As Gillian noted, however, the service has identified a
'Super Hornet shortfall' that will materialise in the 2030s/2040s as
aircraft prematurely reach the end of their 6,000 hour airframe lives
owing to the high operational tempo being flown today. To try and
mitigate this, additional aircraft have already been requested in the
fiscal year defence budget, and Gillian expressed his confidence that
these will be approved.
On the international front, Gillian noted that a deal with Kuwait is
currently going through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process with
the US government and should be finalised in the not-too-distant future.
Current legacy Hornet operator Finland has issued a request for
proposals (RfP) that Boeing is preparing its response to, as has
Belgium. Spain, which also now flies the Hornet, is in the early stages
of a fighter procurement project for which Boeing will bid the Super
Hornet, while India and Canada are being offered the platform to fulfil
their respective requirements also.

EUROSATORY 2016 - Armée de Terre/French Army in action.
By Wording OD

No
operacional do futuro. Em 1998, o EC expediu a “Orientação e Direção
Estratégica da Força Terrestre” (Land Force Strategic Direction and Guidance), o
